Joanna Cole was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby East Orange.
During her year as an elementary librarian, Cole rediscovered her interest in children's books and remembered her childhood fascination with science, which she described recently: "my favorite subjects in school were science and writing, and in science I could combine both.
Cole realized in the course of researching and writing earlier books that her own main interest was in how the parts of an animal's body function to achieve what is required by nature, for example, how does the position of a cat's eyes help it in hunting?
