Kuantan is the state capital of Pahang, the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia. It is situated near Kuantan River mouth and facing the South China Sea. The town comprises 58% of Malays, 32% of Chinese, 4% of Indian and 6% of other races. If measuring the distance along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, it is located roughly halfway between Singapore and Kota Bharu. History

Kuantan is said to have been established since the 1850s. The word "Kuantan" was mentioned by Abdullah Abdul Kadir Munshi circa 1851/2 as below:


"On Thursday night came a boat from KUANTAN. Then it told the ship crews there's a pirate ship at Tanjung Tujuh, forty of them and at Pulau Kapas, and as well as at Pulau Redang; it is spotted by two Kuantan boat and they set off...."


In its early days it is known as Kampung Teruntum (Teruntum Village). It is situated around the mouth of Sungai Teruntum which is in front of the current hospital and has been established by Haji Senik and his followers in 1850s. Their primary economic activities is fishing and small businesses. The prime proof of establishment of the village is the cemetery that is situated near Taman Esplanade in front of the current Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA).


Towards the late 19th century, settlement of Chinese miners and traders saw the early establishment of township in Kuantan and also nearby tin mines such as Gambang and Sungai Lembing. As happened to other states in the Peninsular, rubber plantations attracted Indian settlers as well. Sungai Lembing is a tin mining town in Malaysia near the Lembing River. ... About 260km from kl to the east is the breathtaking South China Sea, spanning over to the Philippines coast. A short distance from the coast is where the Kuantan town is located and protected by a peninsula, Kuantan River. The town is a bustling centre, yet retains a combination of modern and old charm setting of the town and the people. To-date, Kuantan is the leading urban growth centre in the east coast. The town suburban has expanded rapidly 55km up to the Kemaman town, right after the Pahang/Terengganu border. Heavy industries such as Gebeng, Peramu and Kertih at southern Terengganu are within 1½ hour reach. The town has the advantage of strong connectivity from the East Coast Highway, Kuantan airport and the Kuantan port. A dedicated 50km railway has been laid out between Kuantan port and the Kertih Petrochemical Complex. In the future, the rail will be either connected to KL or Mentakab town at the central Pahang. Overall, Kuantan is destined to be a major populated area in the near future, as the outlook in the growth of industries, tourism and trades are on the rise. Recently, the National Physical Plan 2005 has identified four cities (KL, Georgetown, JB and Kuantan) as the future growth centre hub of trades, offices, transportation and tourism.


Kuantan Life here is ‘not so hectic, not so slow’, but an exciting place, made by the existing of surrounding natural beauties and ample spots for chilling out. There are excellent beachside, riverside and streetside here for your daily or weekend spending. And yes, you can go and sit on the beach for hours and sip gin slings if the mood takes you. After all these years of development in kuantan, it hasn’t been too rampant as to cause disorientation and confusion, but at an even pace that allows you to catch your breath once in a while. For one it still remains a good safe town to raise a family, crime is low, prices are not as inflated, people friendly (to a point), there are good food enough to keep your palate from wanting and if you need a break from work, the beaches are just a drive away or a visit to the local park isn’t too far off.

Known as a tropical getaway, one of its major economic activities is tourism. Domestically it is famous for the production of handicrafts, batik and keropok lekor. Kuantan is connected to Kuala Lumpur via the East Coast Highway and Karak Highway. The East Coast Highway also links Kuantan to other major towns in Pahang although locals still prefer the old trunk road. Medical needs are served by several hospitals and clinics. The main hospital is Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, which is equipped with various state-of-the-art equipment such as a CT scanner and MRI. It also serves as the teaching hospital for the Kulliyyah of Medicine, International Islamic University Malaysia. Kuantan's main sightseeing attraction is the beach of Teluk Cempedak. There are also other scenic beaches popular with vacationers in the city's vicinity, such as Batu Hitam, Balok, and Cherating. Kuantan is also known to tourists for its waterfalls. The most established one is Sg. Pandan Water Fall. Two other waterfalls are Sg. Berkelah Water Fall and Jerangkang Waterfall. There are also 3 parks within the city. There are the Gelora Park, Teruntum Mini Zoo and Agriculture Park at Indera Mahkota. A small park located in front of the Hospital is named Esplande Park.
