Born Edward Larry Gordon in 1943 in Philadelphia, he studied violin, piano, trombone and voice in his early years in New Jersey. He attended Howard University, a historically black university in Washington, D.C. on a scholarship to study composition and piano. In the early seventies he began to study Eastern mysticism and believed he'd found a new path for his music and his life. It was also at this time he bought his first zither from a local pawn shop. The following year he was "discovered" by Brian Eno while playing in Washington Square Park. This international exposure led to many requests for longer versions of his compositions which he supplied to many meditation groups on cassette tapes. It also resulted in an expansion of his mystic studies with such gurus as Swami Satchidananda and the late Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, founder of the Ananda Ashram in Harriman, New York. In addition to concerts Laraaji has, for many years, conducted regular Laughter Meditation workshops and performed at various meetings and gatherings across the USA, and been an important contributor to healing Arts festivals and conferences as his beautiful Celestial sounds create a warm and soothing atmosphere for both presenters and visitors.
Not long after this Laraaji was playing in Washington Square Park one afternoon and after he had finished playing and was counting his change he found a note saying, ‘Would you like to meet to consider a recording project?’ It was signed Brian Eno.
Although Laraaji stated from the outset that he would not be in a position to promote the album, his busy schedule of Laughter Meditation workshops, concerts, conferences and gatherings takes care of that.
