Encyclopedia > Leone

The leone is the currency of Sierra Leone, a country on the West African coast. West Africa is the region of western Africa that, most strictly speaking, includes the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte dIvoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. ...

Present banknotes in use are: 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 & 10000 Leones. 10000 Leones have been in circulation for less than a year and are at present still infrequently encountered; this means that most transactions take place in bundles of 5000 Leone notes; notes are generally very grubby condtion averages vg to fine; 10000 Leones at best very fine; Central Bank unhelpful source for banknotes and coins.

Coins in circulation: 10, 50, 100 & 500 Leones. Actually only 100 Leone is available in any quantity. Most shopkeepers, restaurants rarely encounter 500 Leones; Those coins encountered tend to be VF in condition; 100 Leones slightly better.

A few dealers sell older coins and banknotes - condition generally terrible!

Prices in Pick catalogue for notes are inadequate considering difficulty in acquiring better grade notes. Coins are correctly or even overpriced in Krause-Mishler catalogue.
