Encyclopedia > List of Prime Ministers of Greece

The Prime Minister of Greece (Πρωθυπουργός in Greek) is the head of government of the Hellenic Republic and the leader of the Greek cabinet. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President of Greece upon the nomination of Parliament. The current Prime Minister is Kostas Karamanlis, leader of the New Democracy party. The head of government is the leader of the government or cabinet. ... The cabinet of Greece is comprised of the heads of the major ministries. ... This is a list of presidents of Greece. ... The Hellenic Parliament (Greek: Βουλή των Ελλήνων; transliterated Vouli ton Ellinon; literally Council of the Greeks) is the parliament of Greece, located in Syntagma Square in Athens. ... Costas Caramanlis Costas Caramanlis (in Greek Kostas or Konstantinos Karamanlis, Κωστας or Κωνσταντινος Καραμανλης) (born September 14, 1956) became Prime Minister of Greece on March... Note on Greek names: There is no firm convention for the rendering of Greek personal names into English. Traditionally, Greek names were Romanised in spelling (thus, Sophoklis became Sophocles and Aiskhylos became Aeschylus), and also Anglicised in form (thus, Georgios became George and Alexandros became Alexander). English-speaking readers are more used to seeing (for example) Constantine Karamanlis than Konstantinos Karamanlis. A Roman bust. ... Aeschylus This article is about the ancient Greek playwright. ... Konstantinos Karamanlis Konstantinos Karamanlis (Κωνσταντίνος Καραμανλής in Greek; March 8, 1907 – April 23, 1998) was a towering figure of Greek politics. ...

Recently there has been an increasing tendency to use the Greek forms, to reflect a more realistic version of how the actual name sounds, but sometimes there is no consistency (Andreas Papandreou, for example, is never called Andrew Papandreou, but George Papandreou is never called Giorgios Papandreou, but can also be called Georgios Papandreou). As well, certain Greek language consonants do not have exact English language counterparts. Reflecting this inconsistency, this table uses Greek forms, wherever possible, except for those Prime Ministers for whose names an Anglicised form is established due to the absence of a corresponding English consonant. Andreas Georgiou Papandreou, Ανδρέας Γ. Παπανδρέου (5 February 1919 - 23 June 1996) was a Greek economist and politician. ... For George Papandreous grandfather, also called George Papandreou, see George Papandreou, senior. ...
