Maasti Venkatesh Iyengar (June 6, 1891 - June 6, 1986) was a famous Kannada writer, and a Jnanpith (1983) awardee. Maasti Kannadada Aasti meaning Maasti is Kannada's Treasure is how he is treasured by Kannadigas. He is most renowned for his beautifully written short stories. His other works include historical novels such as Chikka Vira Rajendra and Channabasava Nayaka. He wrote under the pen name Srinivasa. Iyengar (or Aiyangar) is the name of a community of Tamil Brahmins of South India whose members profess the Visishtadvaita philosophy codified by Ramanuja. ... He was born in 1891, at Masti in Kolar district of Karnataka. He obtained a master's degree in Arts in 1914. After joining the Indian Civil Service, he held various positions of responsibility in different parts of Karnataka, rising to the rank of District Commissioner. He retired in 1943. His Kelavu Sanna Kathegalu (Some Short Stories) was the first noted work in the modern Kannada literature. Maasti also crafted a number poems on various philosophic, aesthetic and social themes. He composed and translated several important plays. Finally, he edited the monthly journal Jeevana (Life) from 1944 to 1965.


A prolific writer, he wrote more than 120 books in Kannada and 17 in English, over seventy years


He passed away in 1986 at the age of 95.

Hebbar Iyengars are followers of Ramanuja's philosophy preaching Vishishtadvaita.
The characteristic dialect of the Hebbar Iyengars is called "Hebbar Tamil" and is a mixture of Kannada and archaic Tamil, along with a minor influence of Sanskrit.
One theory is that the Hebbar Iyengars of today are descended from the Jains residing in Karnataka who were converted to Vishishtadvaita philosophy along with their monarch, Bittideva, the Hoysala king, around 1180 AD, by the philosopher Ramanuja.

Masti Venkatesha Iyengar, Karnataka's fourth recipient of the prestigious Jnanpith award was one of the tradition-makers of Kannada literature.
