The international Leixões seaport and the Petrogal oil refinery are located in Leça da Palmeira.
The city includes the parishes (freguesias) of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, and has a population of 28,488 (2001); the municipality has a population of 168,451 in 10 parishes.
Matosinhos is located in the seacoast what makes the city a very good place to live.
Matosinhos municipality is home to Leixões Sport Club, Leça FC and other minor clubs.
In early December 2004, the City Council of Matosinhos, which is a part of the Oporto greater area, held a drug policy conference on ‘Prevention, Treatment and Insertion: Debating Practices’.
The conference provided the occasion for local stakeholders, national experts and policy-makers to debate best practices to tackle the drug use problems ranging from cannabis and ecstasy consumption to heroine use in the urban and suburban areas in Portugal.
The Senlis Council was invited by the city of Matosinhos to present the first conclusions of its last project on a new international regulation framework to address the problem of widely-used psychoactive substances.
