Encyclopedia > Megalomart

Mega Lo Mart is the name of a fictional store in the Fox television series King of the Hill. It is portrayed as the archetypical American large retail chain store, in the vein of real-world corporate chain stores such as Wal-Mart or K-Mart. As depicted in the season 2 cliffhanger episode, the presence of the Arlen Mega Lo Mart has a disastrous effect on local businesses. Teenaged employees (who are often depicted as unknowledgeable and unhelpful) hold positions of authority, often over former local business owners.

In addition to regular staple items the store on certain episodes has sold auto supplies, guns, and propane. In one episode, main character Hank Hill tries to buy one fuel filter, only to find they are sold only in packs of twelve. The corporate spokesperson is musician Chuck Mangione, who uses the title of his song Feels So Good as their corporate slogan.

In the season 2 finale ("Propane Boom," broadcast May 17, 1998), the Arlen Mega Lo Mart exploded just as Chuck Mangione was about to perform outside. The cause of the accident was a propane tank — the very same propane that, due to the chain's deep discounts, ran Strickland Propane out of the market and caused Hank to seek employment at the store (Strickland got back on its feet shortly after the explosion) — activated carelessly by Buckley, Luanne Platter's then-boyfriend and Hank's manager. Since any potential customers and most of the staff were at the Mangione concert (and Hank's protest) outside, Buckley was the only casualty, although many bystanders were singed, including Luanne, Hank, and Mr. Mangione. This incident happened in the midst of the Fox network's decision to move the show to Los Angeles, which turned out to be a practical joke stemming from The X-Files' decision to move production from Vancouver to L. A.
