Saint Naum of Preslav (Saint Naum of Ohrid) (c. 830 - December 23, 910) was a medieval Bulgarian scholar, writer and teacher. Evidence about his life before his arrival in Bulgaria is scarce. According to the hagiography of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius by Saint Clement of Ohrid, Naum took part in their mission to Great Moravia and in 867 or 868 became a priest in Rome. In 885 Naum was expelled from Great Moravia after spending some time in jail for the resistance to the German clergy there. The same or the following year Naum reached Bulgaria together with Clement of Ohrid, Sava, Angelarius and maybe Gorazd (according to other sources, Gorazd was already dead by that time). Naum is believed to have been born in 835 and to have been Clement’s inseparable companion from the earliest youth.
It is not accidental that St. Naum is referred to during the liturgy by the expression "light of all the people of Moesia".
Commemorating the 1060th anniversary of Naum’s death, we recall also the history of the Ohrid Archbishopric, which was abolished in 1767 by Sultan Mustafa III and renewed in 1958 by decision of the Macedonian Church Assembly in Ohrid.

The Preslav Literary School (Pliska Literary School) was the first literary school in the medieval Bulgarian Empire.
In 893, Simeon I moved the seat of the school from Pliska to Bulgaria’s new capital, Preslav.
The Preslav Literary School was the most important literary and cultural centre of Bulgaria and all Slavs until the capture and burning of Preslav by the Byzantine Emperor John I Tzimisces in 972.
