In ecology, a niche is a term describing the relational position of a species or population in an ecosystem.
The term 'Niche' was coined by the naturalist Joseph Grinnell in 1917, in his paper "The niche relationships of the California Thrasher."
For example, the niche that was left vacant by the extinction of the tarpan has been filled by other animals (in particular a small horse breed, the konik).

Expanding from its primary sense as an architectural recess, a niche is a small concavity or an enclosure that is set back (e.g., indented).
In ecology, a niche would be the position occupied by an organism (or group of organisms) within an ecosystem or the conditions making possible a habitat.
