It has an area of 25 km² and a population of 3000. It is about 2 hours away by jet boat and 9 hours by ship from Tokyo. There are also daily flights from Chofu Airport located in Tokyo. This flight takes about 45 mintues one way. The island has many beautiful beaches. Habushi beach, which is famous for big waves and white sand, is known as a good location for surfing. The island also possesses three hot springs. The water from the springs is salty, due to the fact that the water comes from the ocean. One must wear a swimsuit in these springs. Specialties of the islnad are a dried fish called kusaya, milk senbei and a plant called ashitaba. A stone called koga is found on the island. It can be used to make glass, of a transparent green. It can also be used to make moyai art.
Tourism attractions There is a "zoo" of animal art, made out of koga stone. There is also a musem, which shows the history of the island. The museum contains a large ship and an old house. One can also watch a video about how kusaya is prepared. There are many ebine flowers (a kind of pink or purple lily) planted in Ebine park, which is open in early spring. One can also find a Glass Art Museum where different pieces are on display, and you can create your own glass work to take home. There is also a farm, Niijima farm, with 2 horses, which can be ridden, and many pigs rabbits and chickens. Finally, there is a bowling alley, a place to play table tennis, and a free bath.
