Encyclopedia > Nonpolar

In chemistry, a nonpolar compound is one that does not have concentrations of positive or negative electric charge. Nonpolar compounds, such as oil, are not soluble in water. Some non-polar compounds have polar bonds, which is cancelled out by the way the atoms are arranged. E.g. linear and tetrahedral shapes are most likely to result in a dipole cancel.

Ballistically controlled nonpolar droplet dispensing method and apparatus - Patent 4341310 (2578 words)
To execute the dispensing process for one or more nonpolar droplets a low voltage pulse is applied to a charge repulsion ring located immediately downstream of the polar liquid capillary during the time when a corresponding number of polar droplets are formed.
1, the nonpolar liquid droplet dispenser is indicated as 1 and the polar liquid droplet dispenser as 2.
In operation, both polar and nonpolar liquids are flowed into the respective capillary nozzles 5a and 5b at approximately the same rate and made to collide at point 12 by coordinating the respective frequencies and by adjusting separate amplitude controls on the respective transducers.
