Encyclopedia > Norfolk Broads

The Norfolk Broads are the northern part of The Broads National Park. The southern half lies in Suffolk. They are sometimes collectively referred to as the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, but many people simply call the entire system the Norfolk Broads. They are a man made creation, resulting from peat being excavated for use as fuel. These workings were then flooded by the rising water table.

Norfolk (pronounced NOR-f'k) is a low-lying county in East Anglia in the east of southern England.
The Angles, for whom East Anglia and England itself are named, settled in this area in the 5th century and later became the "north folk" and the "south folk", hence, "Norfolk" and "Suffolk".
The regional capital of Norfolk is the city of Norwich.
