1998 was a particularly strong year for Rafter, winning two ATP Masters Series back-to-back singles titles at the Canada and Cincinnati, a rare feat. (Only Andre Agassi, in 1995, and Andy Roddick, in 2003, have done the same.) He defeated Richard Krajicek in the Canadian final to take his first AMS title, and then in Cincinnati he beat Guillaume Raoux, Todd Martin, Petr Korda, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Pete Sampras to win there. All five of the players he beat in Cincinnati were in the Top 50, and three were in the Top 10: Korda (No. 4), Kafelnikov (No. 10) and Sampras (No. 2). The average ranking of all five players Rafter defeated in Cincinnati was 18.8. After the Cincinnati tournament, Rafter then won another warmup tournament in Long Island. Entering the U.S. Open as the defending champion, he made the final again, beating Sampras in a five-set match in the semifinals. He then defeated fellow Aussie player Mark Philippoussis in four sets. Altogether, Rafter won six tournaments in 1998. Rafter made the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in 1999, but lost in straight sets to Andre Agassi, the first of three consecutive years that the two would meet in the Wimbledon semis. July of 1999 saw Rafter briefly holding the world No. 1 men's singles ranking. He held the top spot for just one week, making him the shortest-reigning world No. 1 in tour history. As the two-time defending U.S. Open champion, Rafter proceeded to lose in the 1st round of the tournament, retiring in the fifth set against Cedric Pioline after succumbing to shoulder tendinitis. The crowd booed his decision to quit the match. [1] Rafter's ranking then plummeted, as he failed to defend the large amount of ranking points he had accumulated, and his shoulder injury wound up being serious enough to necessitate surgery. [2] By the time he reached the Wimbledon final in July, 2000, his ranking had fallen to No. 52. In 2000, Rafter reached the men's singles final at Wimbledon. In the semifinals of the tournament, he faced Andre Agassi for the second straight year and won in what has been called one of the most thrilling matches ever seen at Wimbledon, particularly due to the clash of different playing styles between the two men. Rafter won in five sets, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. [3] Rafter faced Pete Sampras in the final, who was gunning for a record-breaking seventh Wimbledon title overall (and seven in the past eight years), and while Rafter made a strong start to the match and took the first set, after the match he would claim that he had "choked" part way through the second set, and was then not able to get back into his game. Sampras won in four sets. Year 2000 (MM) was a leap year starting on Saturday (link will display full 2000 Gregorian calendar). ...

In 2001, Rafter reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, but despite holding a two sets to one lead and having the support of the home crowd, Rafter lost the match to Andre Agassi in five sets, after succumbing to cramps so bad that he could barely run for the final two sets. [4] Later in the year, Rafter also made the Wimbledon final again. For the third straight year, he faced Andre Agassi in the semifinals, and won in yet another five-setter that arguably topped the drama provided by their previous year's encounter, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 8-6. [5] In the final, he squared off against Goran Ivanišević, who had reached the Wimbledon final three times before but had slid down the world rankings to No. 125 following injury problems. After a titanic five-set struggle, lasting just over three hours, Ivanišević prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7.
