Transcript: General Peter Cosgrove interview (1016 words)
Peter Cosgrove has taken 40 years to get to Gallipoli and we were with him when he arrived here today and took his very personal tour of duty.
Peter Cosgrove: It just seems to me that perhaps we're at that level of maturity where our young people are thursting for knowledge about that marvellous generation of pioneering Australians who brought us into federation and then the cream of them went off to war.
Peter Cosgrove: Yes.  I actually think this helps to sum up the spirit of Anzac, Kemal Ataturk, the father of a great nation, said the words, "After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well." I think for all Australians, that sums it up.
Peter Cosgrove will be a hard act to follow - Opinion - www.theage.com.au (1062 words)
This is because Cosgrove's public profile has been part cause, part effect of a wider phenomenon: the elevation of the ADF, and especially the army, to a more central place as one of the key institutions of our national life.
To those who work with him, Cosgrove's qualities are exactly those that the public saw and admired when he was in East Timor: a direct manner, genuine courtesy, ready grasp of fundamentals, quick decision, and an ability to say what he means simply and directly.
Cosgrove's time as CDF will be remembered primarily for the role the ADF played in the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
