Encyclopedia > Quantum Sports Cars

Quantum Sports Cars is a UK based kitcar manufacturer. The company was originally located in Stourbridge, near Birmingham, England but were later bought by the Sampson family in Devon.

The company have produced several models, namely the Saloon, Coupe, 2+2, H4, Xtreme, Napier and the Sunrunner. The Coupe, 2+2 and H4 are all Ford Fiesta based (Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 respectively) and are constructed with a monocoque fibreglass shell. The 2+2, Xtreme, Napier and Sunrunner are still available for new customers.

The Saloon and Coupe models are hardtop, 4 seater cars.

The 2+2 is a soft-top 2 seater sports car style car, with a forward opening bonnet and very spacious boot. The standard engine in most 2+2 is the 1.6 litre CVH engine from an XR2 fiesta, but there are several other engines used including the 1.6l diesel from a Fiesta van, the 1.8l and 2l versions of the CVH and most recently the Ford Zetec engine from the later Fiesta and Escorts. The 2+2 also features the drop-down flap headlight design found on the Saloon and Coupe, although some of the earlier cars had round "Mini" style headlights. The rear lights are nearly always from a Sierra Sapphire.

The H4 is a two seater with a targa-top roof configuration. The rear window can fold away into a cavity behind the rear 'seats' and the mid-section of the roof fits nicely into the boot. It uses the same engines as found in the 2+2, although the standard engine is the Ford Fiesta XR2i engine (Either injected CVH or Zetec).

The Xtreme is of Lotus 7 design.

There is an active Quantum owners club that run events around the country.

The Quantum 2+2 was one of the first cars to feature the ZVH engine design (A CVH engine head on a Zetec block) thanks to Jim Hearne.
