Rechelle Hawkes was captain of the Australian Women’s Hockey team (known as the Hockeyroos) for eight years and is one of only two Australian females to win three Olympic gold medals at three separate Games (Sydney 2000, Atlanta 1996 and Seoul 1988).

At the 1992 Barcelona Games, Hawkes experienced the low point of her career when the Australians were upset 1-0 in the preliminaries by the Spanish hosts.
At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Hawkes was given the honour of reciting the Athletes' Oath on behalf of all the athletes at the Opening Ceremony.
Hawkes retired after the Olympics, having represented her nation in 279 international matches.
