Rolf Herman Nevanlinna (October 22, 1895, Joensuu - May 28, 1980, Helsinki) is perhaps the most famous Finnish mathematician. He was particularly appreciated for his work in theory of functions (i.e., complex analysis). Apart from mathematics, Nevanlinna took great interest in culture and politics. His opinions in politics were sometimes somewhat controversial, but his talents as an amateur musician were widely appreciated. He was an active member of the finnish ultra-nationalist party Patriotic People's Movement and also a member of the finnish pro-german movement. Rolf Nevanlinna Colloquia is today an esteemed institution in the field of complex analysis, started as a consequence of Rolf Nevanlinna's activity at the University of Zürich between 1946-1963.
When Nevanlinna retired in 1963, some of his colleagues and former students, Hans Künzi and Kurt Strebel in the forefront, made an initiative to organize Nevanlinna Colloquia on a regular basis.
The larger Colloquia in 1965 and 1975 celebrated the 70th and 80th birthday of Rolf Nevanlinna.
