The city authorities received an ultimatum, suggesting to surrender the city without fight and with transfer of all reservoirs and state property. The governor general Georgy Tolstoy replied Russians never surrender their cities. This was followed by the first bombardment of the city that lasted 6.5 hours and a landing operation near the Old Depaldo Stairway (Каменная лестница) in the downtown Taganrog.
