Stefano Benni (409 words)
Stefano Benni, one of the most well-known Italian authors of political satire, was born in Bologna in 1947.
That is a twenty billion business, one of these we’ll contribute to a good cause, the rest we fritter away ourselves«, is how the »king of showbiz and propaganda« rattles out his usual phrases as he gives up the last little piece of earth.
Benni’s world of 2010 threatens to end in a apocalypse due to globalised ultra capitalism, environmental destruction, war and corruption and can only be saved by spirits.
COMMENTS (1340 words)
Benni is not afraid to pick the obvious (as our expert on France was afraid to pick the Eiffel Tower, or the French Revolution, as prototypical for that country).
Benni starts to show us his audacity and creativity, as this is not a photograph per se but a still from a movie, specifically from Roberto Rossellini's 1945 film "Rome, Open City." It shows Anna Magnani running down the street, screaming, just before the German soldiers turn and shoot her.
Benni claims that De André was a modern-day successor to the troubadours, with a unique feel for dialects and Mediterranean rhythms.
