Encyclopedia > Superbone

The 'Superbone' is a hybrid trombone. It is a cross between the slide trombone and the valve trombone - it has both valves and a slide. Bâ™/F tenor trombone A lip-reed aerophone with a predominantly cylindrical bore, the trombone is a musical instrument in the brass family. ...

The invention is often credited to Dizzy Gillespie, although similar instruments combining valves and a slide were mass produced in the early 20th century, including by C.G. Conn. Such an instrument was commonly called a "valide trombone". Multi-instrumentalist Brad Gowans was well known for playing one from the 1920s through 1940s. In the 1970's the horn became a staple for musicians like Maynard Ferguson and Don Ellis, playing models built by Holton (TR 395) in collaboration with Maynard Ferguson. The Superbone gives the player the option of playing the instrument as a slide trombone, a valve trombone, or in combination. For example, a pattern can be played on the slide, then re-played a step lower by depressing the first valve, but using the same slide positions. The converse is also true in that a pattern can be played on the valves and then lowered by extending the slide and repeating the same valve pattern. An interesting side-effect of this is the valves (or the slide) can be used as an automatic transposer. For example, instead of transposing a part down a minor third, the player needs only to depress the 2nd and 3rd valves (or place the slide in 5th position) and play the part like they usually would with the slide (or the valves).

This means that it is impractical to use the slide as a transposition aid, unless there is enough time (and excess tubing on the valve slides) to retune every valve.
A further, related, limitation of this method is that the larger downward valve transpositions make the 7th and even 6th positions unusable, beyond the end of the slide.
Physically, a Superbone has the fully functioning slide of a traditional tenor trombone with 7 positions, when no valves are depressed.
Piston valve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (642 words)
In addition to its three valves, the trumpet uses a small slide for pitch correction, while the tenorbass and bass trombone both use one or two rotary valves in addition to the slide.
The superbone does not fit in to any of the above categories.
Where piston (or rotary) valves are used, three is the normal minimum (as on a trumpet) and four is not uncommon.
