Homeguard

(Hemvärnet) The homeguard conscists of app. 80 000 soldiers of aged 18-60. The main body of soldiers have served abroad in different missions such as Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Liberia. All of them are volunteers. They are the equivalent to a well equipt militia. All personal accepted into the Homeguard must at least have done the basic conscript service in the army of 7,5-15 months. Training is also voluntary once signed and consist of normal 20-80 hours a year! But the most active can do up to 300 hours a year to refresh their military skills. Professional soldiers

Sweden has until only a few years ago had an conscript army with only a small amount of professional officers and pilots. All the rank of NCO´s was designated as conscript ranks. The army does from the year 2007 recruit conscripts to become professional soldiers in the new Nordic Battle Group force after the end of service. The army has employed soldiers for UN-service on shorter contracts since the 1950´s for service abroad.
