In class field theory, the Takagi existence theorem states in part that if K is a number field with class group G, there exists a unique abelian extension L/K with Galois group G, such that every ideal in K becomes principal in L, and that L is characterized by...
Class field theory is a branch of algebraic number theory, including most of the major results that were proved in the period about 1900-1950. ...
He was born in the mountainous and rural region of Gifu, Japan. He began learning mathematics in middle school, reading texts in English since none were available in Japanese. After attending a high school for gifted students, he went on to the University of Tokyo, at that time the only university in Japan. There he learned mathematics from such European classic texts as Salmon's Algebra and Weber's Lehrbuch der Algeba. Aided by Hilbert, he then studied at Göttingen. Aside from his work in algebraic number theory he was notable for the quantity of textbooks he wrote in Japanese. In mathematics, an algebraic number field (or simply number field) is a finite field extension of the rational numbers Q. That is, it is a field which contains Q and has finite dimension when considered as a vector space over Q. The study of algebraic number fields, and these days...
