Tongeren is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg near Hasselt. On January 1, 2005 Tongeren had a total population of 29,635. The total area is 87.56 km² which gives a population density of 338.45 inhabitants per km². Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium. Known as Atuatuca Tungrorum to the Romans, it was the administrative centre of the district Tungri under their rule. A municipality or general-purpose district (compare with: special-purpose district) is an administrative local area generally composed of a clearly defined territory and commonly referring to a city, town, or village government. ...
