First Som

In the Soviet Union, the ruble was called the "som" in Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Uzbek and this was written on the back of banknotes. The word "som" (sometimes transliterated "sum" or "soum") means pure in Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uyghur, Uzbek as well as many other Turkic languages. The word implies pure gold. Following independence, Uzbekistan replaced the ruble with som at par in 1992. No subdivisions of this som were issued and only banknotes were produced, in denominations from 1 to 10,000 som.


Second Som

In 1994, a second som was introduced at a rate of 1 new som = 1000 old som. This som is subdivided into 100 tiyin. Coins exist in denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 tiyin and 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 som. Banknotes exist in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 som.
