The museum was erected as part of the centenary celebrations of the engineer-statesman Sir M. Visvesvaraya (1861–1962). It was handed over to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1962. Each floor of the museum is dedicated to a scientific discipline. The Engine Hall exhibits used engines of various automobiles, machines used in industry, a jet aircraft engine, and other mechanical devices. The predictability and precision of mechanics is demonstrated by the rolling balls that travel endlessly within metal tracks without an external power source. The Electro Technic Hall contains interactive electrical exhibits which work on the basic principles of electricity, electronics and communication. The Fun Science Hall exhibits the sciences of sound, optics, fluids and perception. The Space Hall is about rocket science and the history of space exploration. Biotechnology hall has exhibits on basics of Biotechnology and its applications. The Dinosaur Corner has a moving replica of a Spinosaurus. The latest addition to the museum is BEL Hall of Electronics, with interesting exhibits on Electronics. 3D films are screened regularly in the 3D theatre. The museum also conducts a mini-planetarium show called 'Taramandal' at regular intervals.This is the only museum in the world other than the Smithsonoan in the US, to have a full scale replica of the 1903 flyer of Wright brothers. A new exhibition by name 'Cultures of creativity' is opened to the public on 29th May 2005. This exhibition is set up by the Nobel Museum, Stockholm, Sweden and introduces the visitors to the concept of Nobel Prizes, the methodology of selection of the awardees, their life, achievement and how their creativity and innovation have changed our way of life.The exhibition will be open till August 31st 2006.

The museum attracts close to one million visitors a year.

The MUseum falls under the purview of the National Council of Science Museums(NCSM), and autonomous body, which is the apex body for popularisation in the country. NCSM was created with the express purpose of satisfying the ego of one Saroj Ghose who wanted to split the organisation from the Indian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and become the supremo himself. After his retirement, one Mr. I K Mukherjee, with a much more inflated ego has taken over the reins with disastrous results. Hoary institutions like the Birla Museum and the Visweswariah Museum which fall under this council face a tragic future because of the ego and incompetence of Mukherjee
