Voula (Greek: Βούλα, translating to something like a "spot") is an exclusive municipality and a suburban town in southern Attica and is the second southernmost municipality in the Megalo Daktylo (Large Fingernail), approximately 17 km S of Athens, Greece, SW of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport and the Attiki Odos (numbers 6 and 62), NW of Cape Sounio and south of the Hymettus Ring. Voula is linked with Posidonos Avenue (GR-91) and has the southernmost terminus of Vouliagmenis Avenue and the road from the airport and a bypass to the northeast. Voula is linked with the Athens Tramway to the northwest. An organised beach lies to the west. The name of the municipality ("Voula" - Spot) comes late from the 60s when for reaching "Vouliagmeni" you needed to pass first from Voula and then you were spotted in your hand. The population was rural until the 1960s, but then suburban housing started popping up and later Voula became part of the Athens Metropolitan Area. It is now a suburban residential area characterised by high real estate prices and its proximity to the commercial area in Glyfada. Voula is the place where Achilleas Livanis was baptized and it is for this reason that he has assumed the name Voulianos. In the 1980s, Vouliagmenis Avenue began extending from north of Voula, intersecting the road to Vari and Paiania. In the 2000s in time for the Athens Olympic Games, the eastern half of the road linking to Paiania as well as the airport was widened with two more lanes. Voula has schools, banks, churches, a hospital, a post office and many squares with various commercial property on them, though the municipality has made an effort not to mimic the commercial nature of its neighboring Glyfada, and has attempted to retain a more serene residential environment. The name Voula which means "dot" or even "mark" in Greek is said to have come from the Otthoman occupation times where geographically it was a check point where people were documented or controlled before entering Athens.
