Waterbury is a village located in Dixon County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 89.


Geography

Waterbury is located at 42°27'26" North, 96°44'8" West (42.457204, -96.735558)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 km˛ (0.1 mi˛). 0.4 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 89 people, 34 households, and 21 families residing in the village. The population density is 245.5/km˛ (645.9/mi˛). There are 46 housing units at an average density of 126.9/km˛ (333.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 34 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.36.


In the village the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 2.2% from 18 to 24, 37.1% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 122.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.9 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $23,438, and the median income for a family is $41,458. Males have a median income of $25,938 versus $23,906 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,764. 19.8% of the population and 13.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.2% of those under the age of 18 and 28.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

CASDE | Waterbury -- Dixon County (643 words)
Waterbury got its name from the big spring in Herrick's pasture, said to be "a copious stream, pure, and cold, which winter could not freeze, nor summer warm." The railroad used this excellent supply of water to fill the boilers in their steam engines.
Waterbury made Ripley's "Believe It or Not" when one of the section workers, in trying to thaw out the pipes during a very cold spell in the winter, set the tower on fire and burned it to the ground.
Now known as the Waterbury Bible Church, under the leadership of Rev. F.Eldon Durant and his wife, Emma, retired foreign missionaries, a sizable addition was recently completed.

The boy is George Henrick, 15, son of Wesley Henick of Waterbury, Dixon county.
He was the first Depot Agent at Waterbury and has been in the grain business and operated his elevator at Waterbury for the past forty-five years.
Mr Smithey was born in Gibbon, Nebraska, August 26, 1890 and was the son of the late James H and Elizabeth WALKER Smithey of Kearney.
