Zeratul's existence is alluded to during the Zerg Campaign on the fictional planet Char, where his Dark Templar forces unite with Tassadar's expeditionary force and briefly engage with Kerrigan's forces. During this time, Zeratul taught Tassadar how to use Dark Templar energies in tandem with Khala disciplines[3]. Zeratul and Aldaris form an uneasy truce, and Zeratul leads the Khalai survivors to Shakuras, the previously unknown homeland of the Dark Templar. Pursued by the Zerg, the Khalai survivors find refuge among the Dark Templar, at which point Zeratul takes his position as commander of their fleet. Dark Templar Matriarch Raszagal urges the player (commanding the Executor again), Artanis and Aldaris to collect two sacred crystals that can scour the Zerg from the planet. During this time, Kerrigan appears on the planet and requests an alliance. Although the Protoss are reluctant to believe her, they allow Kerrigan to accompany them. Retrieving the crystals from Char and Braxis, Zeratul and Artanis accepted Kerrigan's change of heart due to the assistance from her Zerg. Upon returning to Shakuras, Aldaris had led a revolt. When confronted by Artanis and Zeratul, Aldaris raved that Raszagal was not to be trusted. Kerrigan slew Aldaris before he could explain this, and Zeratul, outraged, exiled her from Shakuras. In the final missions of the game, Zeratul is blackmailed by Kerrigan into killing the new Overmind that has formed. Afterwards, he takes back the brainwashed Raszagal that Kerrigan had kidnapped. In the secret mission Dark Origin, Zeratul's escape from Kerrigan is interrupted by a mission to a dark, unidentified moon.
