El Salvador achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. A 12-year civil war, which cost about 75,000 lives, was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty that provided for military and political reforms.

Rafael D. 14th November 2005	The interior wording on the around the coat of arms is: Rebublica de El Salvador en la America Central which means, republic of El Salvador of Central America. Inside the coat of arms, around the liberty cap it says: 15 de Septiembre de 1821, the date of independece Sept. 15 1821. And in the banner in the coat of arms is the motto, Dios Union Libertad, God Union Liberty. Hope it wasnt too late
