José Arturo Castellanos Contreras (San Vicente, El Salvador, December 23, 1893 — San Salvador, June 18, 1977) was a Salvadoran army colonel and diplomat who, while working as El Salvador's Consul General for Geneva during World War II, and in conjunction with a Jewish-Hungarian businessman named György Mandl, helped save up to 40,000 Central European Jews from Nazi persecution by providing them with false papers of Salvadoran nationality. José Matías Delgado y León (February 24, 1767, San Salvador—November 12, 1832, San Salvador) was a Salvadoran priest and doctor known as El Padre de la Patria Salvadoreña (The Father of the Salvadoran Fatherland). He was a leader in the independence movement of El Salvador from Spain, and from November 28, 1821 to February 9, 1823 when he was president of the Central American constituent congress which met in Guatemala City [see "Historical Dictionary of El Salvador" by Philip F. Flemion]. Ana María (17 May 1929 – 6 April 1983) was the "nom de guerre" of Mélida Anaya Montes, the second in command of the FMLN, in El Salvador. An intellectual, she was considered as an icon among revolutionary women in the region. Eventually she was killed by her own comrades on April 6, 1983 in Managua, Nicaragua, after having made many sacrifices during her life as a guerrilla. Major Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta (23 August 1944 - 20 February 1992) was the Salvadoran Army officer and political leader who founded the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), which he led from 1980 to 1985. He was known as "Chele", or "light-skinned face", and was accused by opponents of being an organizer-leader of the death squads who tortured and killed thousands of civilians before and during the Salvadoran Civil War. José Antonio Cortéz (born May 27, 1975 in San Vicente, El Salvador) is an American football placekicker who last played for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League during the 2005 season. Carlos Hernández (born January 23, 1971 in Los Angeles, California) is a retired Salvadoran American boxer. He made boxing history by becoming the IBF world Jr. Lightweight champion by beating David Santos for the IBF Title. Carlos Hernández counted in that fight with the backing up of Alexis Argüello, Roberto Durán and the Salvadoran President, all of whom were at ringside cheering for him. On October 4, 2003, he retained the title against former IBF world Lightweight champion Steve Forbes, with an eleventh round technical decision. Rosemary "Rosie" Casals (born September 16, 1948) is a former American professional tennis player. "The other kids had nice tennis clothes, nice rackets, nice white shoes, and came in Cadillacs. I felt stigmatized because we were poor." Introduction Rosemary Casals earned her reputation as a rebel in the staid tennis world when she began competing in the early 1960s. During a tennis career that spanned more than two decades, she won more than 90 tournaments and worked for the betterment of women's tennis. She was a motivating force behind many of the changes that shook the tennis world during the 1960s and 1970s. Many of these changes helped make tennis the popular sport that it is today. Casals was born in 1948 in San Francisco, California, to poor parents who had immigrated to the United States from the Central American country of El Salvador. Rebeca Moreno is a Salvadoran beauty queen who won the Nuestra Belleza Universo El Salvador pageant in 2008. She is studying the licenciature in Mathematics. Her hobbies include dance, listening to music, going to the cinema and going out with her cousins and friends. She was the shortest contestant in Miss Universe 2008 and won the title of Miss Congeniality. Superstar DJ Keoki (born October 23, 1966 as Keoki Franconi) is an Electronic music DJ. However, the main attractions of El Salvador is its wilderness, such as the Montecristo Cloud Forest and the Cerro Verde National Park, and sites of historical interest, such as the Mayan ruins of Tazumal.
