Guadeloupe is part of a group islands in the Caribbean situated in the Leeward Islands. It is in principle part of France. The country is a destination for adventure tourists because it is a surfing destination and the terrain is perfect for biking and hiking. Guadeloupe depends on tourism, agriculture and light industries as well as subsidies and imports from France. Tourism has been a primary industry because of natural attractions like the verdant mountains, pristine blue waters and extensive plantation fields. This is typical of Caribbean destinations.

The traditional sugarcane crops have been replaced by eggplants and bananas which constitute roughly 50 percent of export income. Flowers, veggies and root crops are cultivated for domestic consumption although Guadeloupe is reliant on imported foods. The light industries include production of rum and sugar while fuel and manufactured items are mostly imported. The nation’s economy has been buoyed by public compensation. However, unemployment is a big problem because the consequences are mitigated by the generous social security system of France.

Political authority in Guadeloupe is inherent in the Prefect appointed by the President of France. The Ministry for Overseas Departments and Territories has been attached to the Interior Ministry of France. There are 43 electoral divisions from which the legislative heads of the two local assemblies are elected directly by the people. The primary assembly is the Regional Council. On the other hand, the General Council’s influence has declined significantly.
