The European Union, the USA and Japan, together, account for about 70% of world total imports. However, the Russian Federation, Eastern European countries and China are rapidly emerging as important destinations for banana exports.

Through the 1990s, the banana trade was the focus of a major dispute at the WTO, centered around a demand for the EU to open its markets to ‘Dollar’ bananas, which originate from Central American plantations owned or controlled by US-based corporations. The EU has subsequently lifted trade barriers that previously allowed imports of ‘ACP’ (African, Caribbean and Pacific) bananas at highly subsidized rates.

Most ‘ACP’ banana producers are small farmers cultivating small plots, a style of farming that is becoming increasingly less viable in the face of competition from the ‘Dollar’ producers who follow large-scale farming methods.
