Where is Albania ? It has 3 million inhabitants with a crime rate of 12 murders/ 1000 people. Everyday 5 to 6 people get killed there in that tiny country ! |

According to this list ( http://www.brazzilmag.com/content/view/7950/54 ) brazil should be with their 2 major cities in the top 3... But this list is regarding countries so it could be correct...
|
Dirceu (brazil) 18th November 2009 |
Brazil should be at least around 5th counting official kills, maybe 1th/2nd counting all murder, so I believe the list is very wrong. |
imani 13th November 2009 |
It is the people why jamaica is like this. They should introduce the law called an eye for an eye, and see if we dont get results. |
imani 13th November 2009 |
It is the people why crime rate is so high in Jamaica. I strongly think we should use the system called an eye for an eye. Then result will come |
dd 28th October 2009 |
The list is outdated by more than 9 years, therefore obviously not correct anymore. I would imagine the top 10 hasn't changed much, though. |
Elias 27th October 2009 |
People, there is difference between crime statistics and actual, documented and reported deaths caused by murder. |
Magnus (El Salvador) 27th October 2009 |
Where is El Salvador in the list? With 12 murders every day and a population of under 6 millions, the country chould top the list... |
morrowh from brazil 22nd October 2009 |
I think this is completly wrong. In Brazil, just in Rio de Janeiro, more than 8000 poeple die a year in crime estatistic, and where is Brazil in this list?

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the USA, meaning that PR likes the benefits of being US citizen but not the responsabilities thats what they call being "BORICUA" |

JAMAICA is still the most beautifull country in the world, and it has the best foods. No matter what the crime rate is JAMAICA is still a god bless nation becasue our students are leaving to go abroad to study and we have the fastest men and women alive thanks to JESUS CHRIST. WE have the most beautiful beaches and hotels and with God in our vessel we can smile at every storm.
Love From Jamaica to you all.

Nice but as indicated, "Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence." Some are not as safe as they seem on paper. |
Jan 11th October 2009 |
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the USA and not it's own country anymore. Their statistics will be lumped in with the US. |
Nancy t. 11th October 2009 |
Whoever asked about Puerto Rico - it is likely that PR statistics are wrapped in U.S. numbers, since they come under Federal jurisdiction for many types of investigations. |

I thought mexico was the #1 on murders??? |
Mario 3rd October 2009 |
Some huge cities in the "evil" United States such as San Diego, San Jose and El Paso (1.3 million, 1 million, 800,000 population respectively) have fewer than 15 murders per year, making them the safest large cities on earth. There are many US cities that are some of the safest cities on earth. Sorry if this fails to perpetuate the anti-American communist agenda, but it's a statistical fact. Keep in mind most the US actually overestimates the crime rate. Cities like London and even Toronto today make New York City look like Disneyland. |
Julie 3rd October 2009 |
Don't forget all those "suicides" in Japan... you know, the ones where someone commits suicide by shooting themselves first, then hanging upside down on a fence. |
fcg 2nd October 2009 |
I don't see Puerto Rico here. Per capita, is like the 30th country in the world for most crimes. This list is questionable. |

Why are these figures so old? I am US citizen living in South AFrica and based on information from various sources, I do not believe the difference in the US and S Africa is so great, particularly for some cities in the US. While crime is a serious problem here and certainly related to poverty, I am not so sure that it is that much greater. Please update these statistics!!!! |
African 23rd September 2009 |
How about you Wayne go live where there is no crime. these stats are old and you go about blabbering unpatriotic mouth. What are you doing to make the country better. |
blh 23rd September 2009 |
It would be interesting to bring all these stats on the number of inhabitants per km ².
For example, Japan h 337.8 km ² and France 96.3 h / km ², or 3.5 times more while the number of crimes was 3.5 times higher in France ... |

NZ should be in a worse place than that, our crime is out of control. We have more murders than that we have around 1-2 a week here. (thats the start there is a whole lot of other crime here, read nz herald thats all we have is crime in the paper) The justice system is a disgrace, you get 8-10 years here for murder..and the murder of kids here is appalling, do not raise a family here. In fact do not live here I want to move away fast. |
ST 11th September 2009 |
There are probably far more dangerous places than those on this list. The real dangerous places are too bad to go around counting the murders. |

As for crime ( murder )the only way to keep the numbers down (as we will never prevent it), is "an eye for a eye". How many people are killed by re-offending murderers ? |

Guns are not the issue. It is illegal to own a gun in almost every country in the top 10. Contrary - most Swiss males have guns (military assault weapons) - but don't kill people with them. And yes poverty is likely the problem, but there is almost no poverty in the US ("poor" people have cars, cell phones, nice clothes, eat out often, and are mostly overweight), so likely greed is a better answer. |

You all are misinformed about us and our guns. we don't buy them to feel safe from criminals. we know the risks of gun ownership and the greater risk to our children. That is just the argument for keeping our guns. We make that argument all the time to the real reason we want to keep our guns. Our Government. A lot of us don't trust them any more than some of you. |

These statistics are like all other crime statistics. They only reflect that which is reported. Not all countries have police who actually find and arrest the murderers. In many countries, the police are bought off.
Secondly, if America banned all guns, the criminals would have no deterrence from robbing, raping and killing the law abiding American citizens. The criminals will find their guns. Ask Daniel from Mexico.
All you America bashers are simply jealous. Perhaps you should take a look around and become a bit more informed.
Being able to speak more than one language is admirable, but that alone does not make you more intelligent OR civilized.
To the gentleman in Pakistan, it isn't Americans who blow t6hemselves up hoping to meet Allah along with 72 virgins. It's Pakistanis, Afghans, Saudis, Jordanians, Egyptians and others in that region who hide behind women and children while trying to shoot American soldiers. Those are the immoral and uncivilized murderers.
Have a nice day, everyone. Try not to sprain your ankles too badly jumping all over the American flag. |
d. 6th July 2009 |
This list looks weird. I checked my country's data and in 2008 in Poland there were 759 murders per 38 million people. That's around 0,02 per 1000 (0,01971 if you consider an exact number of people). |

Everyone talks about banning guns. Why don't they suggest we ban murder? |
CB (Germany) 3rd July 2009 |
The Taliban and Al Qaeda behead, stone and blow up people...not a gun in sight. They and many people who possess guns use them as an extension of thier manhood and to display their inability for compromise.
Objects do not kill people...people kill people. |

How do you know wether widespread gun ownership causes more crime than prevents it? Gun ownership may not be an issue in Spain but it's worth considering it in Mexico since right now only criminals have access to it. |
Nando 5th June 2009 |
It is funny to hear people asking for guns in US to defend and to feel "safe" and then see this statistics and see how good countries with and without guns do.
Keep asking for guns americans, you will never know what peace is. |

Jonny Saxon 21st May 2009 |
Please! Let's not ignore the eight hundred pound gorilla in the room. There is an abundantly obvious correlation between violent crime and race/culture. Underdevelopement and civility are not mutually exclusive. Let us take a honest look at the effect of fatherlessness and out of wedlock births. Picture in your mind a civilized society. What does it look like. Love thy brother. |
Wealth distribution 19th May 2009 |
I saw someone blaming wealth distribution in South Africa. That's hardly the case.
The scandinavian countries are famous for their wealth distribution, and are all at the bottom of the statistics.
Crime is mainly caused by poverty. Wealth distribution done right, prevents poverty, thus preventing crime.
Poverty makes people desperate, causing crime. |

You should try to make a map with at least 2005 or 2004 data. Information for 1998 to 2000 isn't going to help you detect current trends in 2007 at all, for research or other reasons. |
Max (Canada) 28th September 2007 |
Josh from texas, you obviously have never been outside of the usa to see how bad the world really is. News from other nations is not broadcast in the usa except for a few things. Once you go outside of the usa, you will learn what violence, danger, chaos and terror really are, the usa only has a few areas that even come close to how a lot of areas in the rest of the world are every day. |
Thomas L (Ann Arbor MI USA) 19th April 2007 |
For those that try to defend the murder rate of the USA saying we are still better than Irak and Afghanistan - you seem to be missing the point - we should try to compare ourselves to other civilized countries like Japan, Greece, Switzerland, Ireland, Norway. Stop making guns available to every nutcase at Walmart! |

Nation Master needs to update the stats.
In 2005, Trinidad and Tobago, with a population of a little over 1m (1,070,000 according to the CIA Factbook) had 387 murders or 0.362 per 1,000.
Up to March 2006, there have already been 110 murders in T&T, a trend that will eclipse the record 387 set last year. |
