France is by far the leftist european country, it is not surprising in a country where government takes the half of your income.

The political systems in western nations are categorised along a left-right spectrum.
Characteristics of left wing politics include:

Interventionalist / Socialist economy
Equality has a higher value than liberty.
Social liberty is a priority.
Government intervention in moral issues should be minimal.
Emphasis on fair outcomes
Government responsibility for individual needs such as health and retirement

This statistic from the World Values Survey states the percentage of people who described themselves as far-left. Self placement would be influenced by the meaning of the terms political left and right within the context of each country surveyed.
