A 28-year-old tourist was killed by an elephant in a Uganda national park when he approached the animal’s calf. Using its trunk, the elephant threw the man into a tree, then stomped on him and speared his stomach with its tusks. He died by the time a rescue team arrived. The man was carrying an eight-year-old child in his arms as he approached the calf, but managed to throw the child to safety when the elephant attacked.

The incident occurred in Murchison Falls National Park, the biggest national park in the country, 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of Uganda’s capital Kandala.

If you are bitten or struck by an animal, let’s hope it isn’t a mammal other than a rat or a dog, because they are apparently the most likely to kill you.

The so-called 'other mammals' killed 427 people in 48 countries, more than rats (5 deaths), reptiles (101 deaths), crocodiles and alligators (7 deaths), dogs (115 deaths), and non-venomous insects and arthropods (51 deaths) combined.

If you’re American, you’d really better watch it. The United States was first or tied for first in deaths caused by animal bites or strikes for each type of animal except crocodiles and alligators. Of the 706 people killed by animal bites and strikes, close to 19 percent (132 people) of the victims were American.
