Statistics released by the United States National Transportation Safety Board show that 2004 saw an eight percent decline in civil aviation accidents and nine percent decline in civil aviation deaths from 2003. There were 1,715 civil aviation deaths in the U.S. in 2004, down from 1,864 the previous year, while the number of deaths dropped to 635, compared to 695 in 2003.

There was only one crash of a scheduled U.S. airline flight resulting in fatalities, a Corporate Airlines plane which crashed in Missouri, killing 13. There were 68 charter plane accidents in 2004, down from 75 the year before, but the number of deaths from charter plane accidents rose 55 percent, from 42 in 2003 to 65 last year.

The accident rate for charter planes declined from 2.56 to 2.21 per 100,000 flight hours. For private planes, there were 6.22 accidents per 100,000 flight hours, compared to 6.77 in 2003.
