FACTOID # 8: Russia has almost twice as many judges and magistrates as the United States. Meanwhile, the United States has 8 times as much crime.

Witheld--Carry your "research" one step deeper and compare the murder rates in the US by race. You will find that if the US black murder rate of a little more than 20 per 100,000 was the same as everyone else in the US then the US murder rate would be a little more than 2 per 100,000. Very comparable to many countries with strict gun control laws. It's not the guns, it's the culture.

I researched numerous sources on the topic of international murder rates and discovered that the U.S. rates 89th which means there are 88 safer countries to live in based on murder ststistics only.
Canada rated 8th.
I know the gun lobby will hate to read this stat but the 10 safest countries all have very restrictive gun ownership laws.
By my research, I have found that the 3 most prevelant reasons for high homocide rates are in no particular order as follows.
Poverty
Poor education
Lax fire arm ownership regulations.

Think long and hard about these statistics, if you give a poor person with very little education a gun, what do you think will happen.

I think on the first places should be Honduras and Salvador, they have the most crimes per 1 milion people . I read a statistic this year and Salvador had around 80 murders/1 milion p.There are the most dangerous gangs in the world.

Just glancing through these comments, I've noticed there are quite a few racist ones. We cannot just "get rid" of all the Kosovo Albanians or all the blacks. What kind of world do you live in?

How is it that no Turkish comments? Those figures are alarming. I am looking for a Turkish person's side of the story. There's always two sides to story. Want to send a team out there to show some love - realoveministriesinternational.com with much love.

The rate for Ireland is wrong. With a population of about 4 million a rate of 5.84 murders per 1 million people would mean there was only 23 murders there in 2007. In fact there were 84 murders in Ireland that year. So the correct stat is roughly 21 per 1 million people.

And Brazil's murder rate of 232 per million is right up there with Trinidad and Tobago. However, NOBODY beats DC, Detroit, New Orleans, and lil' ole Gary Indiana, with more than 80% Blacks AND murder rates CONSISTENTLY higher than 800 per million.

Why must it be about the blacks? If white people stop committing white collar crimes then the rates and the amount of money being lost would be better. How many of the other countries have an issue with white collar crimes?

Here's a fascinating statistic. The murder rate in America would drop by ~50% if black people were not included. The murder rate among the black population in America is ~17/100,000 people- very close to the murder rate in Africa- 20/100,000.

Fix black people in the US, and crime stats will look like most other Western countries.

St Kitts and Nevis a population of around 40,000+ has a murder rate at 500 per million. In 2008 there were 24 murders , about 1 per 2000 people. To date July 2011 = 21 murders.

Hi SHE - I agree with you. Hats off to the Philippines for not being included in the top 62 of having such great number of murders (per capita). At least it does not have the same level as those countries stated in the top lists. You can check out this link to see more updates and more information about the recent murders (per capita) by country.List of countries by intentional homicide rate

Hope you’re proud of your mainland for that! =)

Hi sweet tomato - The statistics are correct. It’s just that the Philippines is not included in the indicated
cut-off, particularly not included in the top 62 of having such numbers of murders by country. You should be thankful that it’s not included. For more information, you can also try to look at this: "List of Countries by international homicide rate"

This will help you out to check where the Philippines is being ranked. You see the consistency of core national murder rate data may be different since the official definition of an “intentional homicide” differs amongst all countries. Such demographics of an intentional homicide may be affected by changes in trauma care. There may even have under-reported cases of which due to political reasons. Furthermore, several data include various attempts and others do not.

Very few indicators have all countries because the data is not available or not comparable. That's just the reality I'm afraid.

Where is Puerto Rico? it should be up there in the top 5 and it is missing. Over 900 murders so far in 2010. Cuba should be in the bottom 5 and is also missing. This list is flawed.

Brazil had 0.224 homicides per 100,000 in 2009 (putting it in 5th place on this graph). According to this report on Folha de Sao Paulo http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/cotidiano/895939-sensacao-de-inseguranca-e-maior-no-nordeste-aponta-estudo.shtml (in Portuguese)

YOU WANT UPDATE:

For doubters read the WALL STREET JOURNAL of AUGUST 11, 2011, article: JAMAICA'S GROWING VIOLENCE THREATENS RETIREE ECONOMY.

Retirees returning to their homeland Jamaica are being assaulted and murdered for their guaranteed income they worked so hard and long to acquire in the United States and Britain; no wonder Jamaica has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.

the top 10 countries with the lowest murder per capita are countries that ban gun ownership! Guns don't kill people, people kill people? So why can't we americans buy grenades, RPGs then? RPGs don't kill people, people kill people.

time to update your crime stats

I work with criminology and statistics and colombia isn't even on the top five these days

brazil is the third most murderous place on the planet and it isnt even on the list

britain is the most dangerous country in europe when it comes to murders, not estonia

whoever worked on this list should get fired!

You should try to make a map with at least 2005 or 2004 data. Information for 1998 to 2000 isn't going to help you detect current trends in 2007 at all, for research or other reasons.

Josh from texas, you obviously have never been outside of the usa to see how bad the world really is. News from other nations is not broadcast in the usa except for a few things. Once you go outside of the usa, you will learn what violence, danger, chaos and terror really are, the usa only has a few areas that even come close to how a lot of areas in the rest of the world are every day.
Jose (Puerto Rico)
25th April 2007
David, PR is included in the stats for the USA. However as a lone nation we would be right after Jamaica. Not to mention a lot of the murders in PR "disappear" along with other crimes.
Thomas L (Ann Arbor MI USA)

For those that try to defend the murder rate of the USA saying we are still better than Irak and Afghanistan - you seem to be missing the point - we should try to compare ourselves to other civilized countries like Japan, Greece, Switzerland, Ireland, Norway. Stop making guns available to every nutcase at Walmart!

Nation Master needs to update the stats.

In 2005, Trinidad and Tobago, with a population of a little over 1m (1,070,000 according to the CIA Factbook) had 387 murders or 0.362 per 1,000.

Up to March 2006, there have already been 110 murders in T&T, a trend that will eclipse the record 387 set last year.
