Trains are one of the most popular modes of travel, with Chinese people recording an average of 504 km of rail travel per year per person.

It boasts the highest number of aircraft departures (8.5 million), the greatest network of highways (6.4 million kms), and the highest number of motor vehicles per capita, with 765 vehicles per 1,000 people. However, rail travel it the least popular mode of travel, with just 140km of travelled by rail per year per capita, a figure dwarfed somewhat by leaders Japan, (1,900km) and Switzerland (1,730km).
