Hundreds began gathered at a majestic church in this Christian pilgrimage town in southern India for a solemn service to herald in the New Year on Friday night and pray for thousands who perished when tsunamis battered the region a week ago. Young and old joined the solemn ceremony in the 17th century basilica in Valainkani, with heads bowed in reverence and hands folded in prayer. May the souls of all who perished rest in peace. |

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for a major logistical operation to help a half-dozen countries hit by Sunday's tsunami, which by the latest count had killed more than 124,000 people. The UN emergency relief operations coordinator said the death toll was approaching 150,000 and Sweden's foreign minister said it could go as high as 200,000. |

Instead of asking the question "Why did God let this happen" or "lets blame someone or something else". Perhaps the better question is "What are you doing or what are you going to do about it!" Where is your compassion right now? |

This is a wake up call to mankind. It seems we have not developed well enough to detect such disasters beforehand. Had this occured during the times of people such as Thomas Edison & Isaac Newton, sure they would have spent sleepless nights until they developed an early warning system. Wake up America, Wake up comrades! |

Muslims in Indonesia claimed that the reason mosques didn't collapse was because theyre house of god! Or could it really be that they are made with steel and concrete rather than with wood and mud like the average houses! |

The tsunami was a real disaster; what really needs to happen is the early warning system has to be reinforced better. There was a large time lapse between the earthquake itself and the tsunami; if there had been any warning at all of a possible tsunami resulting from an earthquake there probably would have been much fewer casualties, seeing that there was ample warning time. Hopefully in the future a warning system will be in place. |

Why has God been mentioned at all? God does not cause tsunamis, it is plate tectonics. |

Disasters are mostly manmade. Those who are not alert and prepared suffer or die.If a disaster occurs in forest or desert where no settlements are there,they will not have any impacts.If we had developed an early warning system like, floods and cyclones we could have minimized the impacts of Tsunami also.The strong buildings even on the sea shore have not been damaged.Those who could reach to elevated places are saved. So we should not blame nature but our carelessness, lethargy, greed and dependency on super natural things has made us to suffer. Hope we learn a lesson from this and get prepared and versatile ( be strong) to face future disasters which are bound to occur from time to time.May wisdom prevail upon us. |
