Gout has been called the “disease of kings” because a major cause of the painful condition is drinking too much and eating too much rich food. But a study published in The Lancet in April 2004 shows that it is beer that is the biggest contributor to development of the painful condition. The study showed that drinking even two to four beers a week increased the risk of gout. Those who drink at least two beers a day are twice as likely to develop gout as those who drink no beer. For spirits drinkers, the risk of gout increases 60 percent with two or more drinks per day. Wine drinkers don’t show an increased risk. A type of arthritis, gout is a painful condition caused by the build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints. An estimated two million Americans suffer from it. |
