A surprise volcanic eruption on Anatahan Island in the Northern Marianas on April 6th shot a thick plume of ash 15,000 meters into the air. Officials declared the island off-limits until further notice and advised aircraft to avoid coming within 10 nautical miles (18.5 kilometres) of the volcano. The eruption is the fourth in two years, but the first significant one since 1981, when 56 island residents, none of whom has returned, were evacuated. A seismic monitoring system set up by the Northern Marianas government is not functioning because of a lack of funds. A team of other geologists stopped at Anatahan May 6 during a trip to place functioning seismographs along the 14-island chain and found no hint of an impending eruption. The seismographs they placed couldn't be used for a warning system because data is only collected every three months. |
