Europe > Bulgaria

Facts and figures

Background:

The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent from the Ottoman Empire in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. The country joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007.

Well, several EU officials have said yes, but whether it comes to happen is a different story.

Some of the postings on here are utmostly moronic. Go to a library or look up an online entry in an encyclopedia to get the facts. Bulgaria has never been part of the USSR or ny Russian State. It was under a Communist regime from 1945-1989. However, Bulgaria is also the oldest Slavic state, founded in the 7th century. It did not invent but was the first to adopt the Cyrillic alphabet, from where it spread to other Slavic countries. The Bulgarian people are primarily Slavic, but they also carry Old Bulgar genetic and cultural heritage. The theory that some or many Bulgarians also have some Thracian genetic origins has not been supported well.

Hi cc and all other,
It is not always necessary smoller countries to accept the culture of bigger ones. Using the same logic as yours we could say that in the past Britain was part of the USA and British accepted the language and alphabet by the Americans.

The Cyrillic alphabet was invented by the brothers Cyrill and Methodius following orders from the Roman Emperor (Byzantine emperor) to preach christianity to the Slavic population of Eastern Europe. The two brothers travelled as far as Moldova. and the alphabet was used gradually from every slavonic speaker who is an orthodox. The catholic slavonic nations use the latin alphabet. So it is not a case of which country took the alphabet from another country. St. Cyrill and St. Methodius were from Thessaloniki and the case of their origin (slavic or greek) is something that is not determined for sure. As for the thracian origin of the Bulgarians I have my doubts. Bulgarians came to the Balkans before the Slavs maybe they have a Mongolian ancestry maybe not. But through the years they were mixed with the remnants of thracian tribes and with the Slavs, but keeping their own indentity of course. As for Homer's Iliad it is nowhere in the text stated that the Mirmidones (and of course Achilles) were Thracians. They were Thessalians. If they were Thracians they would be allies of the Trojans like all the thracian tribes according to Homer. Instead Achilles was fightning with the Acheans against the Trojans.

Even if Achilles was Thracian and the Bulgarians are descendants of Taracians that doesn't mean that Achilles was Bulgarian. That is like saying that because gorillas and humans have a same ancestors therefore humans are gorillas.
