Hi Chantal, under the clauses of the Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention, Article 72, Senegal has claim to the continental shelf off its coast upto 200 nautical miles or to the edge of the continental margin. Guinea-Bissau also has exclusive claim to the waters upto 200 nautical miles off its coast. The two countries had a long-standing dispute over the the Dôme Flore oilfield off the coast of Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, 70 km southwest of the Casamance river, which is also rich in fishing resources. This was settled in 1993, after 16 years of legal battles and a few skirmishes in 1991, both agreeing to manage and develop their maritime resources jointly. |
