Is there money to be made in the banana middleman business? The United States and France are both in the top 10 for banana exports (total, per $ GDP, and per capita), banana imports (total, per $ GDP, and per capita) and percentage share of total world banana imports.

The value of the United States’ total banana exports represent about 11 percent of the value of its total banana imports. France’s banana exports are worth about 75 percent of the value of its imports.

Neither country is in the top 48 for banana production.

While close to 80% of banana exports are from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, principally from Ecuador, Costa Rica and Colombia, about 60% of this business is controlled by US-based corporations. The Philippines is the only country outside of South America that is a major exporter. The largest producers are nonentities in the world trade in bananas. However, after the EU recently lifted restrictions on imports, and with growing demand from China, a restructuring of trade flows is taking place. The major importers, traditionally, have been the USA, EU countries and Japan.
