COMMENTARY

Christopher Atkerson
26th October 2011
The amount of oil in barrels per day consumed by the United States of America is 18,690,000. The amount of barrels per day consumed by China is 8,200,000. The amount of barrels per day consumed by Japan is 4,363,000. The United States of America consumes 10,490,000 more barrels per day than China. The United States of America consumes 14,327,000 more barrels per day than Japan. The United States of America, in capita, consumes 68.672 barrels per day, per 1,000 people. China, in capita, consumes 5.733 barrels per day, per 1,000 people. Japan, in capita, consumes 39.291 per 1,000 people. I think the United States of America consumes so much oil compared to other countries because our economy is a "wanting-economy". We can never settle for what we have; we always want more. I think China consumes so much oil because of the updated technology in vehicles that require more oil to run efficiently. I think Japan also consumes so much oil because of the updated technology in vehicles that require more oil to run efficiently.

For this fundamental data a third type of report is required. It should be called Oil use per privately owned vehicle.
It would make transparent to all readers in the world the situation of some countries where thereare many "Energy Hogs" while others are responsible energy users in their way to achieve energy sustainability.

Hello as i am from Ireland i am shocked that Ireland is the 11th in the world per capita consumer in the world with a population of 5 million Every irish person (in fact every person in the so called developed world should view Annie Leonard's video "The Story of Stuff"
The is the link to video

Time for the world to wake up to the fact we are consuming too much too fast
America has 5% of the world's population but consumes 30% of the plants resources
it very often has stolen from other countries or at minimum given them very little for it.
The story of stuff will explain all - well done Annie Leonard !

Logan, I disagree. The purpose of giving a per capita number is to have a more comparable oil usage amount. Lists that give oil usage without reference to number of people are the misleading lists.

The smaller the country the less significant the figure becomes. Luxemburg is a very small country surrounded by France,Belgium and Germany. They have a very low excise duty but the budget doesn't suffer because the visiting neighbours compensate amply. On the way to holiday destination like France and Italy Luxemburg is the first stop for the Dutch and the Germans. The petrol stations are strategically placed on the border. If there should exist a "Tour de Luxembourg" it could not last longer then 2 hours.

All personal attacks aside...

The information in the chart is supposed to throw you off. The United States consumes more barrels of oil per day than any other country in the world. We consume more oil than China, Japan, Germany, Russia, and India combined. The latter are, of course, #2-6. In terms of population, that's 307 million consuming more oil than 2.8 billion. That's a 1:9 ratio.

Still feeling ecologically minded?

Obviously Torsten is clueless about the US VI being a tourist destination and tax haven, or those islanders liking cars (GDP$16K), or about the number of fishing boats, or about the number of airplanes, or about the fact that nearly all good consumed are imported.

Obviously, Torsten knows nothing.
