China The vast majority of people in China are Bhuddists, with over 1 billion of them actively practicing the faith, the largest Bhuddist population in the world, representing 77% of Chinese population. However, as such a large nation, there is quite a diverse spread of faiths with more than 39 million citizens Islamic, almost 16 million Protestants and just under 3 million Catholics.
France France remains a predominantly Catholic country, with more than 45 million French people members of the church. The country is also home to the 3rd highest population of the Jewish faith (600,000), behind the US and Israel, some 4.5 million of the Islamic faith, and 1.2 million Protestants. However, the French have one of the lowest church attendance rates in Europe, with just 21% of the population attending church at least once a week.
Germany As the home of the Reformation, there is no surprise that Germany's biggest religion is Protestant - but only just. In fact, there is barely half a million in the difference between Protestants (27 million) and Roman Catholics (26.7 million). Islam is the 3rd biggest religion in the country, with a population of 3 million, while the Jewish faith has just 60,000 members in Germany. Meanwhile, there are more than 400,000 Bhuddists residing there too.
India Indians are predominantly Hindu, with an estimated 80.5% of the population (or around 950 million people) members of the religion. Clearly, India has the largest number of Hindus, though Nepal has the highest percentage rate of 80.6%. However, India is also home to one of the highest numbers of followers of Islam, with 154.5 million, which is 3rd behind Indonesia's 195 million and Pakistan's 160.8 million. It also has almost 17 million Catholics and 11 million Buddhists.
Ireland Ireland remains one of the strongest Roman Catholic nations in Europe, with a 4 million Catholic population representing almost 88% share the country's population, placing Ireland amongst the top 20 countries in terms of Catholic share of the population. However, Ireland is also home to an estimated 160,000 Protestants, almost 20,000 people of the Islamic faith, 6,500 Bhuddists and just 1,000 Jewish people.
Italy Perhaps aptly, as it hosts the centre of the Catholic church within its own capital city, Italy is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic with a population of 57.7 million. However, while despite that it represents 97.31% share of the population overall, it is not the highest rate of Catholics in one country; that honour goes to the tiny French collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon off the coast of Canada, where 100% of its 7,000 inhabitants Catholic. Islam is the 2nd largest religion in Italy, with just under 1 million followers, while Protestantism has the 3rd largest population, with 151,000.
Japan Japan has the 2nd largest Buddhist population, boasting some 122.3 million, with only China's 1 billion out-numbering that figure. In terms of overall national population share, Japan beats China comfortably with 96% Japanese Buddhists, though falls behind Mongolia (99.3%), Bhutan (98%), Thailand (97%) and Cambodia (96.5%). Japan also has 509,000 Protestants and 505,000 Catholics, and over 250,000 Islamic followers.
Philippines With the 2nd highest population of Catholics, and the 13th highest population of Protestants, religion is an important aspect of Philippine life. In fact, is that the 3rd highest church attendance rate (68%), behind Nigeria (89%) and Ireland (84%).
Russia Covering such a vast area, Russia obviously has a side variety of religions. The Russian Orthodox Church hold about 20% of the Russian population, but the second most significant religion is Muslim, which accounts for about 15%, with more than 27 million within Russia’s borders. It also is home to the 4th highest population of Jews, behind the US, Israel and France.
Spain Spain has long been a bastion of Catholicism, and with a population of 39 million Catholics, the 5th highest number of cardinals (8) and the 4th highest number of priests (26,505), that obviously has not changed. However, Spain is also home to over 1 million Muslims.
United States The US has by far the highest population of protestants in the world, with its 82 million more than double that of 2nd-placed UK with 36 million. However, it is also home to the 2nd highest population of Roman Catholics, with 63 million amongst its inhabitants. Meanwhile, Mormons are the 3rd largest religion in the US, accounting for 2% of the population, which is greater than the Jewish (1%) and Muslim (1%) populations.
Vietnam Vietnam is a Buddhist nation with 92% of the population registered buddhists. That means more than 76 million in the country, making it the 3rd largest buddhist population in the world. Nevertheless, it has a healthy Catholic population of 5.5 million, but just 835,000 protestants, representing almost 1% of the population.
