  • Ethiopia has always been known for its very high poverty rate. Ironically, the country has come out as the fastest-growing economy in the African continent and among the most exciting new markets with an average growth rate of 11 percent in recent years. In 2012, this nation was the 12th fastest growing economy worldwide with 10.7 percent each year.

Biz Tech Africa stated in a report that Ethiopia’s committed investment in Information and Communications Technology accounts for 10 percent of its total gross domestic product. Likewise, the government has invested more than $14 billion in this sector during the past decade. Based on the Ethiopia Economic Update, the country can reach middle income standing in 2025.

Ethiopia is employing a development strategy focusing on the aggressive expansion of public investments which has generated positive effects. Public investment rate is the third highest in the world but private investments are also very low. It has the sixth lowest all over the world. On the negative side, the country’s savings rate is relatively low at 10 percent of the GDP. To augment savings, economic observers recommend that there should be higher interest rates in savings, provide more access to private and public facilities, and take advantage of remittances from foreign workers.

The government’s main concern right now is how to feed its more than 80 million people. While its economy has been performing very well, Ethiopia still belongs to the poorest countries in the entire world. According to Nation Master, GDP (per capita) in 2012 was $9.396.45. Poverty rates have decreased but 38.7 of the populations still subsist below the poverty line. The country’s economy still depends on agriculture. Malnutrition still gets in the way of economic growth and human development.
