Last month, six Iranian youngsters created their own video version of Pharrell Williams’ HAPPY and posted it on Youtube. They were held for this act and came out in a government television network expressing penitence for their deed.

There has been a lot of protest even from Iranian media about Iran’s legal system. It comes out with verdicts by implementing an approach to justice which is not fair to the people. This is based on Islamic laws which date back centuries ago. Victims of violent crimes are faced with two legal choices which are absolution or QESAS. If you are charged with a QESAS crime, the victim has the right to ask for payback. The sentence is prescribed accordingly in the Qur’an.

Drug trafficking is a primary problem in Iran. The country has emerged as a shipment point for heroin from the region and conveyed illegally all the way to Europe. Iran shares a boundary which is nearly 1,000 kilometers with Afghanistan. This country is biggest producer of opium in the whole world. There is a brief land route for drug transit between Afghanistan and the European continent.

Iran owns a whopping drug addiction rate of 2.8 percent of the whole populace. Newspapers have divulged that almost 3,500 law enforcement personnel were killed because of anti-drug operations. The campaign against drug merchants costs the country almost $1 billion each year and inflicts a damage worth approximately $8.5 billion on the country’s economy.

Government continues to support terrorist radical groups in Iraq during the reign of Saddam Hussein and even after his overthrow. Iran has been accused by western nations of supporting and funding terrorist groups in Lebanon. Iran subsidized the Hezbollah attack (based on CIA investigations) against US marines stationed in the region. The Iranian government also supports acts of extremists in the Middle East and adjacent countries.

Background:

As an Islamic state, Iran has a very strict policy when it comes to dealing with crime. In fact, according to figures from Amnesty International, Iran carried out 317 documented executions in 2007, the 2nd highest number for the year behind China's total of 470. Still, Iran has the 10th largest prisoner population in the world with 163,526 prisoners, and the prison system is acutely overcrowded, with prison capacity filled to a rate of 243.1%.
