North America > Mexico

Facts and figures

Background:

The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. The elections held in 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that an opposition candidate - Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) - defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). He was succeeded in 2006 by another PAN candidate Felipe CALDERON.

I believe Mexico is a North American country, not part of Central America!

1996: The Commision of Jurists said that the death penalty as applied in the U.S. was arbitrary and weighted against blacks and Hispanics yet they didn't explain what they meant by Hispanics though. Spaniards, mestizos, mulattos, whatever; Hispanic is not a race it's an ethnic group. Latino is also not a race it's more of a regional identity similar to nationality for people from Latin America.

I know Mexico is part of North America, that's why Mexico, USA and Canada signed NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). Central America is a region, not a continent.

Mexico is part of North America, which is why it's part of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Geographically speaking, Mexico is not South America. Being under the USA is not a criteron for geography. Nor is it easy to say 'Latin' America, because such a word stinks of racism.

Mexico is a country of south-central North America. Southern Mexico was the site of various advanced civilizations beginning with the Olmec and including the Maya, Zapotec, Toltec, Mixtec, and Aztec cultures. Mexico was conquered by Cortés in 1521 and held by the Spanish until 1821. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican War (1846-1848) awarded all lands north of the Rio Grande to the United States. Mexico City is the capital and the largest city. Population: 93,008,000.

ok, mexico is not south america, nor central america. As far as my geography memory takes me, is still part of north america. Is so easy to place Mexico in central america, because Mexico does not look like canada or the US. But give it up, for the sake of avoiding confusion is mexico is in north america.

Eric, where did you get that mexico is in south america?

Culturally and ecnomically Mexico is more part of the central and south America that Northern North America. It's population is largely Latino rather than European like America and Canada, they speak a different language, they are far poorer, their government is much more involved in industry and their citizens lives... so I think it would be simply correct to consider Mexico part of central America.

Mexico is part of North American. Everything north of the Panama canal should be considered North America, and everything south of it should be considered South America. Economically speaking, Mexico is part of "North America". Mexico exports most of its products to the US and not to South America or "Central America".

'Latino' is not a race. If anything, Mexicans are closer to native Americans. Latin America has people of mixed descent from all over the world. Mexicans are mostly native Americans with some European (Spanish) blood. Culturally, Mexico is unique, a mixture of native American and primitive European cultures! The Aztecs were from central Mexico!

Mexico is the best country in North America, because in the late 1700s through the 1800s, when the US was killing people, Mexico established the first university (UNAM) in America (including North, Central & South America)!

Mexico is a large country which borders in the south with Central America and in the north with North America. Since most of the county is above the Tropic of Cancer I think it has to be considerd as part of North America. Culturally speaking, it is part of Latin America which is basically Central and South America.

I think we all agree that Mexico is a great country. A culture that is well known and identified worldwide. They haven´t need a media invasion like USA to achieve that ´cause mexican culture is incredibly rich and unique.
I think "frommexico" is right in using the Tropic of Cancer to say that Mexico is in North America.

Mexico is located in North American, and I agree with Michelle I know people in the USA like to call themselves Americans but the fact is everyone that lives in the American continent is an American.

I also would like to add this Mexico should be called by it's official name and that is THE UNITED STATES OF MEXICO.

There is North America and South America. What is in between is Central America, but Central America is not a continent. There is the first world and the third world, and what is in between is the second world. Los Angeles, New York, and Miami are in the second world. Confusing, huh???

Harvard, the oldest university in the USA, was founded in 1636. The oldest university in the new world is in Lima, Peru, not Mexico!

Mexico is the greatest failure in the Western Hemisphere. Its people are uneducated by choice and the whole country is extremely polluted. The United States has gained nothing except drugs, crime, gangs, and trashy cities from the Mexican people.
